Marcel Quintana

Head of Robotics and Automation

Marcel has been in CTAE since January 2007 as a Robotics & Automation R+D Engineer. He studied Computer Science in the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and undertook his master's degree project in "ThermoGraphic Supervision" at the Mathematics and Systems Engineering School in the University of Växjö, Sweden.

His professional career started at GTD, a Catalan company located in Barcelona, where he had the opportunity to join the Science and Advanced Control Department. Over two and a half years, he was mainly involved in two projects – ARC and DEMAND – funded by the 5th Framework Programme of the European Commission, on the humanitarian demining area. During this period he gained experienced on the technical domains of information fusion and geographic information systems among others. After this period, he was selected to participate in the ESA’s Young Graduate Trainee programme, and later on employed by a Swiss startup company, Solenix GmbH; where he joined the Advanced Mission Concepts and Technologies Office within the Operations Department at ESOC, located in Darmstadt, Germany. During this period he had the chance of collaborating in the investigation of new technologies and concept’s for ESOC’s core business in spacecraft and ground segment control. He performed research and exploitation of virtual reality and web3d technologies as well as collaboration in the areas of knowledge engineering and information technology.

He is currently preparing a PhD in “Automation, Vision and Robotics” at the Department of Systems Engineering, Automation and Industrial Informatics in the Technical University of Catalonia. His professional interest is in developing his career in the technical domain and specialising in the aeronautical and space sectors. 

Personally, he is always willing to learn languages and discover new cultures, and he likes to enjoy life in Barcelona and the Mediterranean.
